Bloody Paws in Pet Dogs
A bloody paw can be a fairly typical incident in dogs. Figuring out the source of the blood is critical in pinpointing if the injury will be minimal, significant, or potentially fatal. If you don't understand how the injury happened, get ready for anything. When the injury maybe includes a fracture, make plans to see the vet, or urgent pet care clinic.
Where to Start
Is the hemorrhaging serious, modest, or light? Modest to extreme bleeding should always be handled by your veterinarian. If it is minor blood loss, apply direct pressure on the area using a clean cloth.
Is the hemorrhaging due to a cut or laceration? If you can view the full magnitude of the slice, and the blood loss is minimal, clean the whole area using a 50/50 water and hydrogen peroxide mix. In case your dog resists strenuously, it may be better to let your vet to handle it. Alternatively, if you believe you can handle your dog, apply a muzzle and resume your efforts, maybe with the aid of a friend. You might find it less difficult to dip an entire paw in to a bowl of the hydrogen peroxide combination to completely disinfect the wound and the areas around it.
As soon as you're finished, utilize a non-adherent dressing and bandage to the paw, making certain to never wrap this too tightly. If at all possible, always leave the toes exposed for you to quickly look for indicators of inflammation. This would result if your bandage were too tight and will involve re-bandaging the wound more loosely. White-colored athletic socks make outstanding over-bandage protection since you probably have a few already, you can cut them as necessary, and blood turns up well providing you with with a sign that you may need the vet's help after all.
The majority of the cuts in the paw area involve the interdigital webbing and involve suturing to guarantee proper healing. When the laceration is to the pads of your dog's paw, sutures are usually only advantageous if the cut is deep enough to reach the flesh below the pad. This is most likely ideal left to your vet to determine.
Is there a foreign body stuck in the wound? Always use caution if a foreign item is lodged in your dog's skin. If you don't know just what exactly it is and that this won't cause any more damage should you remove it, you're better off leaving it for the vet to deal with. If you are reassured that there is no risk in extracting it, do so carefully, and be ready to manage any bleeding that may result from its removal.
Is the hemorrhaging coming from a damaged toenail? A cracked or broken toenail can be a painful bloody mess. If the bleeding is minimal, proper disinfecting, washing and dressing could allow healing and recovery without veterinary intervention. If the bleeding continues after you have done your best to control it and/or bandage the paw, the veterinarian may need to cauterize the blood vessels in order to stop the bleeding.
Prior to commencing your exam, put on heavy gloves to protect your hands from anything sharp that could be stuck in your dog's paw.
